Outdoor Wall Lights With or Without PIR Sensors
Updated: Oct 4
A PIR version switches in response to detected movement under its specified conditions. A standard fitting is usually controlled separately. Two lights can look almost identical but have different controls, so check the exact product code and description before ordering.

Where a PIR light is useful
Automatic activation can be convenient at an entrance or a route used after dark. Consider where people approach from, what the sensor can see and whether passing movement outside your property could trigger it. Mounting position, detection area and adjustment options are product-specific; follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
When a standard light may be better
A standard fitting can suit a terrace or seating area where you want light to remain on while you use the space. It may also suit an existing control arrangement. Ask your electrician to confirm compatibility rather than assuming a sensor model will work with a separate timer, dimmer or smart control.
Check more than the IP rating
Assess exposure to rain, the wall position and the manufacturer’s intended use. Material and finish suitability matter too, especially in coastal locations. Aim light where it is useful and consider neighbouring windows. A PIR sensor is a control feature, not a guarantee of security.
Common questions
Can I override the sensor? Only if the exact model supports it; do not assume all PIR lights have manual override. Will the sensor work through glass? Check the instructions and avoid designing around an unconfirmed capability. Can I buy matching sensor and standard versions? Often there are related options, but confirm the finish, dimensions and exact SKU for both.

How outdoor wall lights contribute to a scheme
Use the daytime finish to relate to door furniture or exterior details, then assess the nighttime light pattern separately. A pair may frame an entrance, while a quieter fitting can serve a side route. Avoid making every area equally bright; choose the distribution and controls for the actual use of each location. Check the view from neighbouring windows and inside your own home before finalising positions.
