Coastal Outdoor Lighting: Why IP Rating Is Not Enough

Outdoor lighting near the coast faces more than rain. Salt-laden air can accelerate corrosion, so an IP rating alone does not prove that a fitting is suitable for a coastal location.

IP rating and coastal suitability are different

An IP rating describes protection against ingress of solids and water under defined test conditions. It does not by itself describe resistance to salt, corrosion or long-term exposure in a marine environment. Look for explicit supplier wording about coastal use, materials or tested resistance.

Which materials and finishes should I check?

The correct choice depends on the exact product and exposure. Check the base material, coating, fixings, warranty exclusions and maintenance instructions. A sheltered porch and a property directly exposed to sea air are not equivalent conditions.

Maintenance still matters

Even a product described for coastal use may require regular cleaning and maintenance. Follow the

manufacturer's instructions and avoid assuming that a decorative finish is maintenance-free.

Use only verified product claims

Installation and location

Outdoor electrical installation should be completed by the appropriate qualified electrician. Confirm the required IP rating, mounting position, cable entry and environmental exposure for the actual site before purchasing.
