LED Coving and Cornice Lighting: Planning a Soft Ceiling Glow
LED coving lighting can give a living room or bedroom a quieter evening setting by lighting the ceiling or upper wall. Before buying the strip, decide what you want to see from your sofa, doorway and bed. The moulding, mounting position and controls are part of the effect, so plan them together.
What is the difference between coving lighting and a decorative ceiling light?
A pendant or chandelier gives the room a visible focal point. Concealed lighting puts the emphasis on a surface instead. Our styling suggestion is to use the ceiling glow as a background layer and keep a decorative fitting or lamps where they contribute character or useful light. You do not need to illuminate the entire perimeter to make the scheme feel complete.
Can LED strip be fitted behind existing coving?
Have the existing profile assessed before ordering. A moulding fitted tightly at the wall-to-ceiling junction may offer no useful concealment or light path. Ask your installer whether a purpose-designed profile or another detail is needed. Orac's guidance covers lighting mouldings, mounting and aluminium supports; its instructions are specific to its products rather than permission to adapt any cornice.
How do you avoid seeing LED dots or a bright line?
Check the view from the lowest seat as well as from the doorway. A strip hidden from a standing person may be exposed when someone sits down. Ask to test the proposed strip, channel and cover together with a sample of the profile. Follow the LED and moulding manufacturers' guidance on positioning, ventilation and support. Orac also identifies light shining through some moulding materials as a separate issue requiring product-specific treatment.
Should coving lighting be warm white or colour changing?
Choose around how the room is used. For a restrained evening scheme, compare a fixed warm-white option with your existing lamps and ceiling light. If you want colour changing, discuss which effects you will actually use and how you will select them. Matching the Kelvin number is a starting point for white light; compare the finished effect on your paint and ceiling before committing to a long run.
Can I dim LED coving lighting?
Ask for the strip, driver and control to be specified as a compatible system. LEDVANCE's range includes different driver and control types, so do not assume every driver works with your existing wall dimmer. Tell us and your electrician whether you want simple wall control, separate switching or another arrangement. Read our LED dimming guide before choosing the controls.
Where should the driver go?
Resolve access before the decorative work is finished. Ask your electrician to confirm a suitable location, ventilation, cable routes, permitted run lengths and the manufacturer's loading requirements. Agree how the driver can be reached later. A neat scheme should still be practical to maintain; avoid making a serviceable part inaccessible behind a finished ceiling.
What should I bring for advice in Camberley?
Bring a room photograph, a close-up and dimensions of the proposed profile, the lengths of the runs, your paint colours and details of existing controls. Mark the effect you want on a photograph: ceiling glow, a wall wash or a particular feature. We can discuss LED strip options and availability; contact us to check what we can supply for your project. This is lighting advice, not an offer to supply every moulding or carry out installation.
