LED Dimming & Flicker: Why LEDs Flicker and How to Avoid It

LED lighting can dim beautifully, but only when the lamp or LED driver and the dimmer are compatible. If the combination is wrong, the symptoms are familiar: flicker, buzzing, a poor dimming range, lights that jump on suddenly, or LEDs that glow faintly when switched off.


Why do LED lights flicker when dimmed?


Flicker is often a compatibility problem rather than a fault with the light fitting itself. LED lamps and integrated LED drivers contain electronic components, and different products respond differently to different dimmers. A dimmer that worked perfectly with old incandescent or halogen lamps may not control a low-wattage LED load smoothly.


Are all LED bulbs dimmable?


No. An LED lamp must be specifically marked as dimmable if it is to be used on a dimmer circuit. A non-dimmable lamp should not be treated as dimmable simply because it lights at full brightness. When buying replacement lamps for a chandelier or decorative fitting, check the lamp specification first.


Can an old dimmer work with new LED bulbs?


Sometimes, but not automatically. Older dimmers were commonly designed around much higher incandescent or halogen loads. A handful of low-wattage LEDs may sit outside the dimmer's useful operating range, or the electronics of the lamp and dimmer may simply not suit one another. Replacing the dimmer with a model designed and tested for LED loads is often part of the solution, but the exact LED and control still need to be compatible.


What does minimum load mean with an LED dimmer?


Some dimmers need a minimum electrical load to operate stably. If the connected LED load is too low, the result can be flicker, flashing, reduced dimming range or a faint glow when the lights should be off. Maximum load also matters, and LED loads can behave differently from traditional lamps because of their electronic drivers and inrush current.


Why do LED lights buzz or hum on a dimmer?


Buzzing can come from the lamp, the LED driver or the dimmer. It can indicate an incompatible combination, electrical noise or a load that is not being controlled in the way the product was designed for. If changing to a known-compatible dimmable lamp stops the noise, the original lamp and dimmer were likely a poor match. Persistent electrical buzzing should be checked rather than ignored.


Why do LEDs flicker only at low brightness?


Some LED and dimmer combinations are stable at medium and high output but become unstable near the bottom of the dimming range. Compatible LED dimmers may provide a low-end trim or minimum-brightness setting to prevent the control entering the unstable part of the range. The correct setting depends on the actual dimmer and lighting load.


Why does an LED glow when the dimmer is switched off?


Some electronic controls allow a very small current to pass even when the light appears to be switched off. Certain sensitive LED lamps can respond to that current by glowing faintly or flashing occasionally. This is another reason to treat the LED lamp and dimmer as a matched system rather than choosing each in isolation.


Are integrated LED fittings dimmable?


Only when the manufacturer says they are. With an integrated LED fitting there is no replaceable household bulb to change, so the dimming performance depends on the LED driver built into or supplied with the fitting. Check the product specification for whether it is dimmable and, where stated, which dimming method or control type it requires.


Does every LED dimmer work with every dimmable LED?


No. The word ‘dimmable’ on both products is not a guarantee that every pairing will perform identically. Dimming range, flicker and audible noise can vary between combinations. Where a manufacturer publishes a compatibility list or recommended control, that is more useful than relying on wattage alone.


Should I just add up the LED wattages?


Total wattage is still useful, but it is not the whole compatibility test. LED controls can be affected by minimum load, maximum permitted LED load, inrush current and the electronics of the individual lamps or drivers. The dimmer manufacturer's LED rating and compatibility guidance should take priority over assumptions based on an old incandescent wattage rating.


What should I check before buying a dimmer for LED lighting?


Check four things: whether the lamp or fitting is genuinely dimmable; the make and model of the LED lamp or integrated fitting; the dimmer's stated suitability for LED loads; and any manufacturer compatibility or control guidance. For a multi-lamp chandelier, note the number and type of lamps as well.


Manufacturer guidance matters


UK dimmer manufacturer VARILIGHT's technical support guidance specifically advises checking compatibility and minimum/maximum load conditions, and notes that low-end flicker can sometimes be improved by adjusting the dimmer's minimum brightness setting. Lutron likewise tests individual LED and dimmer combinations because LED behaviour varies by product.


When should an electrician be involved?


If the dimmer itself needs replacing, the circuit behaves unpredictably, or you are unsure what type of control is installed, use a qualified electrician. Our role is to help match the decorative fitting and lamp specification to an appropriate dimming requirement; electrical installation and diagnosis of the fixed wiring should be handled by the electrician.


What to bring us if your LEDs are flickering


If you are choosing a new chandelier, pendant or replacement lamps, bring the make and model of the dimmer if you know it, photographs of the existing control, and the specification of the lamps or fitting. That gives us far more to work with than simply knowing that the light is ‘LED’.
