How to Choose a Picture Light: Width, Position and Glare
Updated: Oct 4
A picture light should help you see the artwork comfortably without becoming the brightest object in the room. Start with the framed width and height, the depth of the frame and the surface of the picture. A glossy print behind glass behaves differently from a textured canvas. The right fitting depends on its light distribution and reach as well as its length.

How wide should a picture light be?
Compare the illuminated area with the whole picture, not just the fitting with the frame. A short fitting may leave the edges dark; a wider one can still produce uneven light if its beam is narrow. There is no reliable one-size ratio for every product. Ask for the manufacturer’s beam information where available and check the effect on artwork of a similar size.
Position and glare
Allow the arm to project far enough to clear the frame. Check the light from the places where people normally stand or sit: a bright reflection that is invisible straight on may appear from a sofa at an angle. An adjustable head can help, but it cannot compensate for every combination of glazing and position. Decide where the picture will hang before fixing the light.
Wired or rechargeable?
A wired light suits regular use where a suitable supply can be planned. A rechargeable version can avoid a visible supply cable, but needs access for charging. Compare runtime at the brightness you intend to use, charging arrangements and switching. Do not assume the advertised maximum runtime applies at full output.
Common questions
Can LED light damage artwork? Light exposure can affect sensitive materials; LED does not make an artwork immune. For valuable or delicate works, ask a conservator about exposure and illumination. Should the light match the frame? It can, but matching nearby metalwork or choosing a quiet finish may be more successful. Bring a photograph and frame measurements so we can compare the visual balance.

What picture lighting adds to an interior scheme
A considered picture light can make an artwork the evening focal point and connect it with the furniture below. Choose the fitting’s finish in relation to the frame and nearby metalwork, then assess the illuminated result from the room’s main viewing positions. Avoid competing pools of brightness around every object. For valuable or light-sensitive originals, seek conservation advice before deciding on exposure and display lighting.
