Chandeliers in Surrey: See Them Hung and Lit Before You Buy

A chandelier is the most photographed and least photographable fitting in lighting. Sparkle, drop, spread and shadow: none of them survive a product image. At Illuminations of Camberley, chandeliers are displayed hung and lit in our Surrey showroom, so you can stand beneath them and judge the light itself before you commit. We have been doing it this way since 1971.

What you can only judge in person

Four things decide whether a chandelier works in a room, and a photograph shows you none of them. The first is sparkle: crystal behaves entirely differently under a camera flash than it does lit in a real room. The second is drop, and whether the fitting sits comfortably under your ceiling height or crowds it. The third is scale, which is the most common regret we hear about online purchases; chandeliers photographed in isolation almost always arrive larger or smaller than imagined. And the fourth is the colour of the metalwork once the lamps are on, because antique brass lit warm is a different finish from antique brass photographed cold.

Crystal, modern and traditional designs

Our Camberley showroom displays chandeliers across the range: classic crystal designs, traditional multi-arm fittings in brass and bronze, and cleaner contemporary pieces, including designs from RV Astley. Because they hang lit in real room settings, you can compare warm and cool output side by side and see how each one actually lives.

Sizing a chandelier for your ceiling height

A useful starting point: with a standard ceiling of around 2.4 metres, look at semi-flush or shorter-drop designs and keep roughly two metres of clearance beneath the fitting in walking areas. Over a dining table, the rules relax, and a lower drop of around 75 to 90 centimetres above the table surface tends to sit well. Higher ceilings, stairwells and double-height halls open up longer drops and larger frames. Bring your room dimensions, or simply a photograph of the space, and we will work through the proportions with you in the showroom.

Where can I buy a chandelier in Surrey and see it lit first?

At Illuminations of Camberley, on Camberley High Street. Chandeliers are the one purchase you should never make from a photograph, and ours are displayed hung and lit so you can judge sparkle, drop and proportion for your own ceiling before committing. We have been advising on chandeliers in Surrey since 1971, and customers travel to us from Guildford, Woking, Farnham, Fleet and across Hampshire and Berkshire to choose theirs properly.
