Bathroom Mirror Lighting: Side Lights or an Above-Mirror Fitting?

Mirror lighting should make everyday tasks comfortable without an exposed source shining into your eyes. The best arrangement depends on mirror width, wall space, the people using it and the light already in the room. General ceiling light and light at the mirror perform different jobs.

When side lights work well

A balanced pair can bring light towards the face from both sides and reduce reliance on light directly overhead. Check the usable wall space and whether the fittings will clash with a cabinet door, tap area or nearby shelving. Assess the position for different users before fixing it.

When an above-mirror light is useful

An above-mirror fitting may suit a narrow room or a mirror close to a side wall. Compare its light spread, projection and shielding; a decorative bar that looks right in a photograph may still create glare or uneven illumination. Check the manufacturer’s permitted mounting orientation.

Colour and control

Compare the light alongside the room’s other sources so the mirror does not look unexpectedly warmer or cooler. Colour rendering matters when judging skin, make-up and clothing. Dimming can be useful, but compatibility must be confirmed for the particular fitting and control.

Bathroom suitability comes first

Do not choose a fitting from appearance or IP rating alone. A qualified electrician should confirm the required protection, electrical class, location and installation against the applicable requirements and manufacturer instructions. A general wall light or rechargeable fitting is not automatically suitable for a bathroom.

Common questions

Is an illuminated mirror enough? It depends on where its light falls; some designs are mainly decorative. Can I put a normal wall light beside the mirror? Only if it is suitable for that installation, as confirmed by your electrician. Bring a room photograph, mirror and basin dimensions, and the positions of the bath or shower so the options can be assessed.
