Bathroom Lighting and IP Ratings, Explained

Bathrooms are divided into zones by how much water reaches them. Zone 1, above the bath or shower, needs a fitting rated at least IP65. Zone 2, within 0.6 metres of it, needs IP44. Beyond those zones a standard fitting is safe, though IP44 near a basin is sensible.
What an IP rating means
IP stands for Ingress Protection, and the two digits tell you how well a fitting keeps out solids and water. The first digit covers dust; the second, the one that matters in a bathroom, covers water. IP44 resists splashes from any direction; IP65 resists low-pressure jets. The higher the second digit, the wetter the position a fitting can take.
The bathroom zones
Zone 0 is inside the bath or shower and needs IP67. Zone 1 is directly above, to 2.25m, and is safest at IP65. Zone 2 extends 0.6m beyond the bath and around a basin, needing IP44. Anything outside these zones can in principle take a standard fitting, though a little water resistance never hurts near a basin.
Layering a bathroom
A bathroom benefits from layers just as any room does. A central IP-rated ceiling light gives overall brightness; light at the mirror handles the close work of shaving or make-up; and a warm accent, where the zones allow, softens the room for a bath. Keep the general light even rather than harsh.
Getting the light right at the mirror
Mirror lighting is where bathrooms are most often let down. Light from directly above throws shadows under the eyes and chin. Light to either side of the mirror, at roughly face height, is far more flattering. A colour temperature around 3000 to 4000K with a high CRI keeps skin tones honest.
