How to Choose Table and Floor Lamps for Your Room

Choose a table or floor lamp for the place where it will be used. Check the footprint, shade height, reach, switch and cable route, then decide how its light and shape contribute to the room.

Choose your starting point: bedside, reading or atmosphere

For a table or bedside lamp, begin with the furniture footprint, overall shade width and switch reach from your usual position. Check whether the shade and bulb are included; a base-only price is not the price of a complete lamp.

For a reading floor lamp, begin with the chair and page position, adjustment and light direction. For softer background light, compare the shade and distribution instead. In either case, check the listed dimensions, cable route and the exact light-source and control requirements.

Choose a task or a mood

A directional lamp can support reading or desk work; a shaded lamp can provide softer surrounding light. Some designs can do both, but check the actual beam and adjustment. Decide what is missing from the room before choosing a lamp purely for its appearance.

Measure the usable space

For a table lamp, measure the furniture surface and allow room for everyday items. For a floor lamp, check the base footprint and the full reach of any arm. Allow clearance for doors, curtains and walking routes. Overall height alone does not tell you whether the lamp will fit.

Check comfort from your seat

Sit where you normally read or relax and assess where the shade or head will sit relative to your eyes. An exposed bulb can be distracting even when the lamp looks well proportioned from the doorway. Check whether adjustment brings the light to the page without placing the source directly in your sightline.

Make the controls easy to use

Confirm whether the switch is on the body, cable, foot control or light head. Check the route to a suitable socket without creating a trip hazard. A touch-control or dimmable description needs the exact lamp and bulb compatibility checked; do not assume a smart bulb will work with every built-in control.

What portable lamps add to an interior scheme

Our styling approach is to use lamps to bring light closer to the places people sit. A pair can frame a console, while different lamps can distinguish a reading chair from a sofa area. Repeat a colour or texture to connect them, and vary height where that helps the furniture arrangement. Assess the room after dark as well as in daylight.

Check what is included

A base may be sold without a shade, and a complete lamp may still need bulbs. Confirm supplied parts, lamp cap, maximum wattage, colour temperature and service arrangements for integrated LEDs. If choosing a separate shade, use our lampshade guide to check fitting and dimensions.

Before-purchase checklist and FAQs

Check task, footprint, height, shade or beam, switch reach, cable route, included parts and controls. Should table lamps match? They can, but coordinating one feature is often enough. Can a floor lamp light the whole room? That depends on its distribution and the room; it may work best alongside other sources.
