How to Choose a Lampshade: Size, Fitting and Light

Choose a lampshade by checking its fitting first, then its dimensions and the light it produces. A beautiful shade is only useful if it fits the base safely, screens the bulb from normal viewing positions and suits the space around it.

Checking a Laura Ashley shade against your existing lamp

Before ordering, record the base model and the old shade’s top diameter, bottom diameter, height and fitting position. Check whether the replacement uses a ring or carrier fitting, and whether the specified reducer is included or needed. A matching brand name or colour does not establish compatibility.

If you are unsure, send the lamp model and clear photographs of the fitting, or bring the details to the showroom. We can help check the combination before you order for collection.

Check what you are buying

Confirm whether the listing is for a shade alone, a lamp base alone or a complete lamp. Photographs can show a finished combination even when components are sold separately. Record the product code, fitting arrangement and any carrier or reducer required before ordering.

Match the fitting before the shape

Compare the existing lampholder and shade support with the supplier’s specification. A ring fitting and a duplex shade that needs a carrier are different arrangements. The Lampshade Loft’s fitting guidance explains this distinction; it does not establish compatibility for every product in our range. Send photographs of your base and holder if you need help checking.

Measure the whole arrangement

Measure the base, the proposed shade’s widest diameter and height, and the usable surface of the table. Check nearby walls, shelves and curtains. A paper outline can help you judge scale while the lamp is switched off; remove it before use. Assess the shade from both standing and seated positions rather than relying on a single proportion rule.

Consider the light, not just the fabric

Compare an opaque shade with a translucent one and look at the lining colour. Their effects can be very different. Check whether the bulb will be exposed below or above the shade from your usual seat. Follow the product’s bulb size, wattage and clearance instructions; an LED bulb still needs to be physically suitable.

What a shade adds to an interior scheme

Our styling approach is to use the shade as a bridge between the lamp and the room. A plain drum can simplify a decorative base; a pleated or patterned shade can introduce texture to a quiet corner. Repeat one colour from curtains, artwork or upholstery, while allowing the lamp to retain its own character. Judge the combination lit and unlit where possible.

Before-purchase checklist

Confirm shade-only or complete lamp; fitting and support; diameter and height; bulb clearance and limits; switch access; colour when lit; cleaning instructions. For a ceiling pendant, use our separate easy-fit guide rather than assuming a table-lamp shade can be inverted.

Common questions

Must the shade match the base colour? No. A deliberate contrast can work if its scale and light are right. Will one shade fit every lamp? No: check the fitting and support. Can changing a shade improve a room? It can alter the lamp’s visual weight and distribution of light, but it will not replace a missing task light.
