How to Choose a Reading Lamp: Position, Brightness and Colour

A good reading lamp should make the page comfortable to see without filling the whole room with harsh light. The right choice depends on where you sit, which hand you use, how adjustable the lamp is and the bulb or integrated LED inside it.
What makes a lamp suitable for reading?
Useful reading light needs to reach the page directly while keeping glare out of your eyes. An adjustable head, arm or shade makes positioning easier. Decorative light elsewhere in the room can remain softer while the reading lamp performs the practical task.
Where should a reading lamp be positioned?
Place the lamp beside or slightly behind the reader so the light falls across the book rather than towards the face. A right-handed reader will often find a lamp on the left reduces hand shadow; a left-handed reader may prefer the opposite. The chair, table and shade shape can change the best position, so treat this as a starting point rather than a rigid rule.
Floor lamp or table lamp?
A floor reading lamp is useful when there is no suitable side table or when the light needs to reach over a chair. A table lamp can provide both decorative ambience and useful reading light, provided it is tall enough and the shade directs sufficient light onto the page. Check the footprint as well as the height so the lamp fits the available space safely.
How bright should a reading lamp be?

What colour temperature is best for reading?

Should a reading lamp be dimmable?
Dimming is useful when the same lamp is used for focused reading and gentler evening ambience. If the lamp uses a replaceable bulb, the bulb and dimmer must be compatible. For integrated LED lamps, use the manufacturer's stated dimming method rather than assuming every control will work.
How does a reading lamp fit into layered lighting?
