Choosing a Drum Lamp Shade for a Table or Floor Lamp

A drum shade is the quiet workhorse of lamp design — a straight-sided cylinder that gives a more even, contemporary spread of light than a tapered or empire-shaped shade, without drawing attention to itself. It's an easy fitting to get wrong on proportion, and an easy one to get right once a few basic rules are followed.

Getting the diameter right

Diameter is the detail most people overlook. As a general guide, a drum shade should be roughly two-thirds the height of the lamp base beneath it, and wide enough to fully cover the base at its widest point when viewed from above — a shade that's too narrow leaves the base looking exposed and unbalanced, while one that's too wide can swamp a smaller base entirely. For a bedside lamp, that usually means a shade in the 25–35cm diameter range; for a larger floor lamp, closer to 40–50cm.

Material changes the light as much as the shape does

Linen and cotton shades diffuse light softly and evenly, giving a warm, gentle glow that suits bedrooms and living rooms. Glass and acrylic drum shades let more light through and read brighter and cleaner, better suited to a desk or reading lamp where output matters more than atmosphere. A dark-lined shade — often black or gold on the inside — focuses light downward and creates a more directional pool of light, useful over a side table where you want the glow contained rather than filling the whole room.
